Highway Cycles shop expansion and renovations

We’re very excited. We’ve been talking about expanding the business for ages, but it has just become a reality. When our neighbour moved out of the next-door unit in Hartham Lane, we moved in! And now the builders have begun work on extensive renovations that’ll result in a beautiful new purpose-built showroom and workshop that’s more than double the size of our current space.

We are a community
.
We were recently broken into which was not a pleasant experience. But if the burglary showed us one thing, it’s how much support we have from the local cycling community. So many people have posted their support on social media or come in to express their shock about what happened that we feel positively loved! This turned a horrible, negative experience into more of a positive one, and it makes us realise what amazing customers we have.
.
So the new, improved Highway Cycles will be more than just a bike shop. We have big plans to turn it into a destination with a real sense of community. As part of this, we’re building a walled outside seating area and are in talks with the owner of a mobile coffee van to come and sell real coffee and other drinks to cyclists, pedestrians and office workers alike. We’ll have a Hub Wall in our new shop where local cycling groups can advertise their own rides and events. We’re also hoping to hold events at our new, improved shop, such as live streaming of the Red Bull Rampage, as well as e-bike demos and anything else we fancy... including a big opening party!

What will we do with all that space?
The first thing we’re going to do is create a dedicated workshop, so our mechanics have more space to work. We’ll also be able to employ an extra mechanic, which means we’ll be able to repair more bikes more quickly. We’ll also make sure all the parts they’ll need are kept in a storeroom adjacent to the workshop, so they can find everything quickly and easily.
.
With so much more space, we’ll be able to have dedicated areas, such as an e-bike showroom and different bike displays, as well as displays of helmets, clothing and accessories. We’ll even build ourselves a nice office which will be cool in the summer and hot in the winter (rather than the other way round as it currently is!).

Encouraging Hertfordshire to get cycling
Cycling has enjoyed a resurgence in the last couple of years. Environmental awareness has encouraged many people to leave their car at home and spend more time on their bike. During the pandemic, the combination of a need to exercise and the quiet roads meant a boom in the number of people discovering the joys of two wheels, and it’s wonderful that the enthusiasm is still going strong.
.
We’re excited to be a part of this two-wheeled resurgence, and we want to do everything we can to encourage more people to get on their bikes and e-bikes and enjoy cycling safely.
.
We’ve got a lot more ideas about what we’ll be doing when the new shop opens, but first we need to finish the renovations. Sadly they’re taking a bit longer than we’d have liked because of delays caused by lockdowns, self-isolating and the resulting materials shortages. But you can guarantee we’ll be shouting about progress on our social media accounts, so follow us and check it out!
