Claud Butler
Claud Butler was a successful club rider, who began making frames in
his South London shed in the mid 1920's. As the popularity of cycling
grew, and in particular club cycling, Claud Butler was able to open
his first shop in Battersea, London, in 1928. This was soon followed
by more shops across London, a Midlands depot in Nottingham, and the
famous head office and works in Clapham Manor Street.
He had soon built up a reputation for making strong and distinctive
frames, and in 1931 Claud Butler bikes appeared at the Cycling World
Championships in Copenhagen. This was followed by appearances in the
1932, 1933 and 1934 World Championships, as well as the Los Angeles
Olympics in 1932.
The Claud Butler business fell on hard times during the Second World
War, and although the late 1940's did see business start to recover,
sadly by the mid 1950's Claud Butler was forced to declare bankruptcy.
The Claud Butler brand name and registered trade marks were bought by
the Holdsworth Cycle Company in July 1958. In 1978 Elswick Hopper bought
the Falcon Cycle Company, were re-named Elswick - Falcon in 1982, and
they, in turn, then bought the Claud Butler and Holdsworth names in
1987.
On the 2nd of November 1978 Claud Butler sadly died, but his name, and
the strength of the brand he created lives on, and today is still as
popular as ever, under the proud ownership and trusted wing of Falcon
Cycles.
